What You Didn’t Know about Alfred Molina

Alfred Molina is one of Britain’s most renowned and diverse characters actors of the stage, small screen and cinema. Molina’s starred in everything from big blockbusters like “Spider-Man 2” to the biopic “Frida.”Also, he has done voiceover work for 23 characters in film, television and video games.

Before he got the acting bug he was the son of immigrant working class parents from Italy and Spain. To support his pursuit of acting he lived off of welfare checks, had odd jobs and busked as a stand-up comedian until he was accepted into the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977.

Molina’s fluency of English, Spanish and Italian and his southern European heritage has allowed him to play a wide range of characters of over a dozen ethnicities. He’s played an uptight French mayor in “Chocolat” and a traitorous Peruvian tour guide in his film debut, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

“My parents were immigrants to England, and I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in London that was full of other immigrant families from all over Europe, the West Indies, [and] Africa. When I went to school, all the kids were first-generation born in England,” said Molina.

Although he has played a villain in many roles, outside his costume Molina is a staunch advocate of immigration rights, AIDS research and Alzheimer’s care. His wife of almost 30 years suffers from Alzheimer. He currently has a film in post-production (Remember Isobel) that will benefit Alzheimer research.

“She doesn’t always recognize me. She did when I visited yesterday. You see flashes of the old person. That’s the heartbreaking part. You see those moments. You long for them. But they come less and less,” said Molina.

What You Didn’t Know about Charlie Sheen

What You Didn’t Know about Charlie Sheen

The always controversial and sometimes tigerblood winning actor of Spanish and Irish descent, Charlie Sheen was born Carlos Irwin Estévez. Growing up, his actor father Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez also known as Martin Sheen, had bought him and his brother, Emilio Estévez, a Super 8 camera to make home films with their friends and other future actors Tom Cruise, Rob and Chad Lowe, as well as Sean and Chris Penn.

It wasn’t long before Sheen decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an actor himself. After a few uncredited roles in films that his father starred in, Sheen earned his stripes in films like “Platoon” and “Wall Street” in the 1980s and “Major League” and “Being John Malkovich” in the 1990s.

However, the Hollywood lifestyle started to plague Sheen and he fell into the trappings of drugs. By 1998, he was hospitalized for a cocaine overdose, which stalled his movie career. After going into rehab, Sheen started the 2000s strong by becoming an incredible television presence.

In 2000, Sheen replaced Michael J. Fox on “Spin City” and later won a Golden Globe for his role as Charlie Crawford. Shortly afterwards Sheen had his own sitcom, “Two and a Half Men,” and he received several more Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. By 2010, Sheen was the highest paid actor on television, making nearly 2 million per episode.

Despite his professional successes, his home life was a mess and eventually threatened his career. After three broken marriages, losing custody of four children, a broken engagement and accusations of domestic violence and  drug abuse, Sheen had a public breakdown. In 2011, he called the creator of Two and a Half, Chuck Lorre, derogatory names after his third failed attempt at rehab resulting in him getting fired from the popular show.

After finding out that he was going to become a grandfather by his eldest daughter in 2012, Sheen started getting his life back on track. He scored another hit show with “Anger Management,” regained temporary custody of his twins from his third marriage and was allowed to visit his two daughters from his second marriage.

Not only has he refocused his life on his children, and grandchild, but he has been and continues to be personally involved in several charities. He has raised and given money towards AIDS research, he  hosted a charity for rescue workers of the 9/11 attacks and he donated money from his “Truth” tour for the Japanese Earthquake relief fund. Also he donated the largest cash sum to the USO ($1 million) and started to raise awareness and funds for The Association of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Research, Awareness and Support.

Fun Facts

  • Charlie Sheen is one of the few recipients of the rare Aids for Aids Angel Award (AFA Angel Award)
  • Sheen is a published poet
  • He has appeared on film with all of siblings, his father and ex-wife Denise Richards
  • He initially dreamt of becoming a shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds

Benicio Del Toro set to play Kingpin of the Cuban-American Mafia in ‘The Corporation’!

<!– Benicio Del Toro set to play Kingpin of the Cuban-American Mafia in 'The Corporation'! –>

Benicio Del Toro is set to play Jose Miguel Battle Sr., the Don of a Cuban-American Mafia, in a soon to be made film.

Del Toro will star in The Corporation which is a book of the same name written by author T.J. English and highlights the Cuban-American underworld.

Paramount Pictures & The Appian Way production company—owned by Actor Leonardo DiCaprio—were the victors in acquiring the rights to the book-to-film adaptation after a bidding war between Hollywood studios & production companies broke out last week. The film has been cited as becoming the “Cuban Version” of the The Godfather & American Gangster.”

The film’s screenplay will be written by David Matthews who has penned scripts for HBO series Boardwalk Empire & Vinyl and will surely capture the book’s “epic story” of the Cuban-American crime syndicate, The Corporation.

Del Toro will portray Jose Miguel Battle Sr. who was the head of the Cuban-American mafia. Prior to becoming the Godfather of the Cuban mafia, Battle Sr. was a former police officer during President Fulgencio Batista’s presidency prior to the Cuban Revolution; in the early 60s, he also assisted the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in training Cuban exiles, and volunteered as a soldier in the Cuban liberation effort of the Bay of Pigs Invasion in April 1961 in-which he was captured. After being released, Battle Sr. moved to Union City, New Jersey were he began The Corporation empire.

This is the first time Del Toro has portrayed an influential figure of the underworld. In Escobar: Paradise Lost, Del Toro played Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar so he is surely able to get into the mindset of what it takes to be the leader of such an organization.

There’s no word yet when the film goes into production, but so far it has Hollywood buzzing.
